Archetypal Tarot Counseling

Artistic Imagery that Inspires Change and Healing

Purpose and Goals:
Archetypal Tarot Counseling uses Jungian and transpersonal psychology theories to teach new techniques of self-assessment and self-development. This course uses Tarot card’s symbology in the same way as guided imagery and dream interpretation uses inner images. The skills gained will help the nurse facilitate assessment of their client’s developmental needs that will aid client teaching. In addition, the student will discover that Tarot counseling can be used in many applications beyond traditional nursing. This new skill will expand the nurse’s ever growing scope of influence in the community.

We teach our students to: communicate with respect and kindness, encourage a nonjudgmental attitude; have the courage to face the unknown, to pay attention, and be curious; understand how the images in Tarot cards help us become more self-aware and effective in our healing and in our lives; master multiple therapeutic Tarot approaches; learn values and parameters one needs know to practice and be certified in Archetypal Tarot Counseling (ATC).

Our methods include dream work, guided imagery, shamanic inner work, all integrated with the symbolic study of the archetypes. A professional certified in Archetypal Tarot Counseling will have mastered several approaches. Certification will tell the public that they have command of the basics and have been willing to go beyond them and that they have been mentored in attitudes, interactions, communicative abilities and ethics.

Archetypal Tarot Counseling
Class Overview
This certificate program explores contemporary and historical information relevant to the use of Tarot cards in counseling. Tarot is a centuries old system of cards containing archetypal imagery that we use as a tool for accessing transpersonal levels of consciousness. In combination with the counseling process, the artistic images, on the cards, bring forth unconscious content and stimulate insights for both client and counselor.

We take an analytic approach with Tarot as a modality for exploring client concerns. Our program introduces the student to Jungian concepts and vocabulary as well as theory and techniques. We will use journaling, expressive art, dreamwork and guided visualizations to deepen our exploration of the self through the cards. Participants will give readings to each other and observe demonstrations by the workshop leaders. The course design makes for a seminal and inter-active experience.

Self Development

After reviewing a brief history of Tarot, you will begin to study the artistic symbols found on the faces of the cards. You will understand how the upper and lower levels of the archetypes represent innate forces within the inner life of all people. You will begin a personal dream journal to learn the principles of dream interpretation, which you will use in counseling. A Tarot workbook will also be kept to record your experiences of the cards during visualization and meditation. You will come to know how to develop yourself in both intellectual and intuitive ways.

Counseling Others

Using group discussions concerning inner imagery and shamanism, you will be taught transpersonal assessment techniques using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs model and the chakra system. You will learn how to guide others in Jung’s active imagination techniques as you learn more about the Major Arcana’s archetypal levels. You will also learn two approaches for reading cards, exposing potential pitfalls of Tarot counseling. Issues concerning transference and counter transference will also be addressed.

Tarot Counseling in the Workplace

Using Joseph Campbell’s metaphor of the hero’s journey, you will identify unique ways to use Tarot counseling in a professional capacity. The group will also discuss giving advice vs. opening options; identifying spiritual emergencies; when to refer to another professional; professional ethics; and the complexities surrounding cultural, sexual and racial diversity.

Practicum

In a relaxed atmosphere, participants will observe demonstrations by the workshop leaders and will give readings to each other. Competence will be determined through personal assessment skills, and your ability to administer effective counseling techniques. Independent study assignments may be turned in within two months after the completion of the training course.
